The feast of daylight, the carnival of life

When the Tropic of Cancer welcomes the sun’s most generous direct rays, the longest day of the year quietly arrives. The summer solstice, which was referred to as “the longest day” by the ancients, is not only a feast of light but also a vibrant bloom of the earth’s vitality.

Ancient wisdom is particularly profound on this day. Since the Zhou Dynasty, the summer solstice has been an important solar term, during which the imperial court holds a ceremony to “sacrifice to the earth”, and there is a tradition among the people of eating noodles, where the long noodles symbolize the long daylight. Behind these traditions lies the reverence and adherence of our ancestors to the laws of nature. Today, although we no longer hold grand ceremonies, the gratitude for nature is still worth passing on.

The rhythm of modern life is gradually drifting away from nature, but on the day of the summer solstice, you might as well follow the wisdom of the ancients that “the daydial is already extreme, and the night leaks from now on”. On the longest day of the year, put down your phone, step out the door, feel the temperature of the sun, and listen to the rhythm of nature. Perhaps under the shade of a certain tree, we can regain the emotion of resonating with heaven and earth.

After the summer solstice, the days will gradually shorten, but the sunlight at this moment is just right. Let us cherish this light, just as we cherish every brilliant moment in our lives. In this longest daylight, may everyone find their own radiance.
